The former Norwegian international claims that the teenage leader made the right call by seeking to advance his development in the Bundesliga
Erling Haaland was right to refuse a move to Manchester United, says Jan Age Fjortoft, with Borussia Dortmund the best place for him despite the Red Devils visiting him on a private jet.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear before the January transfer window that he was eager to meet with a compatriot at Old Trafford with whom he had previously worked at Molde.
The giants of Premier League United did their best to tempt Haaland to move to England, and the talented teenager received superstar treatment in discussions over a deal.
However, he had to make the decision to head to Germany, with Dortmund securing a treasured signature ahead of many European rivals.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to life in the Bundesliga, while maintaining a remarkable hit rate in the Champions League, and remains a target for the continent’s best teams.
Talk of a future move to United or Real Madrid continues to echo, but Fjortoft believes the right call was made to reject his advances at this stage in Haaland’s career.
The former Norway international forward said ESPN FC : “He is incredible. I played with his father, which makes me feel old. They have planned their career in an excellent way.
“He is from a club in Norway called Bryne, then he went to Molde, which is the best club [in Norway] to develop young players, with a manager named Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“He had offers from all over Europe, including a club called Juventus, which is also not a bad place to play.”
“They went to Red Bull Salzburg because they felt it was the best place for him to develop.”
“He did fantastic in the Champions League as we all see.”
