Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unhappy with his neglected stars, but Manchester United still struggled to win at Bramall Lane on Thursday night.
United won away for the sixth time in the Premier League this season, having fallen behind each time, beating Sheffield United 3-2 thanks to an excellent double from Marcus Rashford.
But they got off to a bad start when goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s mistake against his former club gave David McGoldrick an opening goal, and the game ended on the ropes when McGoldrick hit again.
“The beginning was so sloppy,” Solskjaer said. “We were slow again, and I’m very surprised by that.
‘We talked about it and showed them videos, and it happened again. We were running through the field.
“ We were also a bit sloppy with 3-1 up. It could have been more comfortable, but the character was fantastic for each of us. ”
Henderson, who only made his second league start for United in place of David de Gea, was caught in possession by Oliver Burke for the first goal, but recovered to make a nice late save from Lys Mousset.
‘The good, the bad and the ugly, maybe in a different order!’ Solskjaer said. ‘He freaked out and was entertained on the ball for the first goal, but made a great save towards the end.
He is always learning. He’s probably been itching to get back here, and he’s just showing his character for the rest of the game to begin with.
Dean went through it with flying colors, he just did what he had to do.
United went through a severe physical challenge and Solskjaer faced Blades boss Chris Wilder on the touchline towards the end.
“I think the three goals were excellent,” he added. ‘I wanted to try them here today. We knew it was going to be a physical test. A fight. They were going to kick us.
‘I don’t mind a fair entry, but there were a couple right in front of me. Maybe I went overboard with a word (to Wilder), but I apologized and Chris and I will have a drink later. ”
United’s away form is in stark contrast to their results at home and Solskjaer urged his players to end that slump when Leeds United return to Old Trafford on Sunday.
“We need to order the start form,” he said. “Sunday is a huge game. We have been waiting for years and we will be ready for it. ‘
The defeat left Sheffield United off to the worst start in top flight history, having earned just one point from their first 13 games.
However, Wilder refused to get too downhearted, saying: ‘Manchester United are an iconic world football club. There is a huge gulf between us and we have to try to bridge it by doing a performance that I think we did.
‘I don’t worry about my work. People don’t understand what Sheffield United is all about when it talks about people’s future.
“But I’ve been in the game long enough to know that question will be asked.”
