Pep Guardiola has said it would be a “big mistake” if Arsenal were to fire former assistant Mikel Arteta as coach.
The Manchester City manager made the remarks after his team eliminated Arteta’s men from the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a resounding 4-1 victory at the Emirates.
Arsenal have had their worst start to the season in the league in 46 years, but Guardiola believes they would be wrong to fire Arteta at this point.
‘They’ll make a big, big mistake if [sack Arteta]” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. I’m pretty sure they’re going to trust him.
‘I understand that analysts analyze the results. But I was with him for many years and I know his incredible quality as a human being and especially as a coach, how he gets involved in everything. It is only a matter of time and you will be fine.
I’m not on the board. For me they will make a big mistake if they are thinking [to sack him].
They give him confidence, they won two titles when he had not spent a long time at this club.
“In this pandemic situation, with the injury problems they have and the games they played they always played well.
But sadly, these games are our job and it depends on the results. But football changes so fast in a week.
I can talk about my experience with him, one of the most successful teams in the history of England that we had and he was part of this success and it would not be possible without him, and to create something like this you need time like me. in my first season. ‘
Arteta was appointed Guardiola’s assistant in 2016 and left for Arsenal last December, having helped City win back-to-back Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
Tuesday’s Carabao Cup exit put even more pressure on the Arsenal manager as his team was completely disarmed by the competition’s champions.
City opened the scoring in just the third minute when Gabriel Jesus headed Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross that beat Runar Alex Runarsson as the goalkeeper tried to clear.
Alexandre Lacazette restored parity with a hunched header from a Gabriel Martinelli cross just after the half hour, but the Gunners were impressed.
Runarsson, in particular, had a night to forget when he came in for Bernd Leno, letting a Riyad Mahrez free kick slip out of his grasp for City to get back in front again.
Phil Foden scored a delicious chip before Aymeric Laporte converted a cross from the young midfielder to complete the win.
Arsenal are 15th in the Premier League, just four points above the relegation zone.
