Guardiola explained that even with the backing of its Abu Dhabi owners, City was subject to the same financial pressures as its rivals due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

City have only scored two goals in their last three league games, but hope to host Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus for Tuesday’s League Cup quarter-finals with Arsenal.

However, the record scorer of the League Cup champion, Argentine Sergio Agüero, is sidelined by an undisclosed problem who has already had knee problems and illness this season.

Asked about the prospect of new blood coming to the club, Guardiola replied: “No, I don’t think so because the economic situation in the world is what it is.

“All clubs fight, we are no exception.”

City are eight points behind champions Liverpool after 14 games in their bid to regain the title that Jurgen Klopp’s team took from them last season.

Guardiola says the lack of goals hurts his chances of catching Liverpool, but hopes that City will be more clinical against out-of-form Arsenal.

“We are creating clear occasions that we cannot score and when this happens we will always suffer,” he said.

“So I can’t say how we will be this season.

“Game by game is the only thing I can do and now we are going to London to play Arsenal in the League Cup.”

Guardiola, however, can be thankful that despite failures on the front row, his defense has been in miserable shape with seven clean sheets in their last eight games in all competitions.

“It’s unbelievable, that’s how we can still be there, knocking on the door of the teams that are above us,” Guardiola said.

“We need it to be stable and maybe one day the players will be fresh to score goals.”
