GPL: Medeama struggles to play title contender in loss to Dreams FC

“We are not very impressed with the referees. What they did here was very bad and we don’t like that ”.

These were the words of Medeama SC’s left-back Patrick Yeboah after their 2-1 loss to Dreams FC.

Yeboah was enraged and continued to receive slight shoves from his coach Samuel Boadu every time he criticized the referee.

It could be one of two things, Boadu was investigating Yeboah to prevent him from getting into trouble, or perhaps, the loss was due to poor performance from Medeama rather than poor refereeing.

The moment of controversy came to death when Joseph Esso was fouled in the area. After a few seconds of deliberation, the referee awarded the penalty that Ibrahim Issah converted to give Dreams FC all three points.

Before that, they had all been Dreams from the beginning. The Still Believe Lads came off the blocks with more intensity and were duly rewarded when summer signing Joseph Esso opened his account with a well-targeted effort.

Coach Karim Zito’s men kept up the intensity and had several opportunities to double their lead, but poor decision making left Dawu’s team down.

Medeama entered the second half much stronger as they began to enjoy a little more possession.

Second-half substitute Kwadwo Asamoah regained parity with his first touch, just 60 seconds after his inning.

Before the match, 50% of the matches between the two sides had ended in a draw, and it seemed that the case was until Dreams received a penalty that was converted by Issah.

Medeama does not seem aspiring to the title

Despite losing several attackers in the transfer window, Medeama was touted as a team that could fight for the title this season.

The return of Justice Blay along with other midfield options like Rashid Nortey, Richard Boadu, and Eric Kwakwa made Medeama’s midifiedl to be considered.

So far, Medeama has been uninspiring, especially in the middle of the park. Midfield has failed to dominate either game against Great Olympics and Dreams.

At the Theater of Dreams, the attacking force seemed disjointed as the team failed to create attacking opportunities in the first half.

The winger’s coach, Boadu attributed it to the lack of playing time among his new players.

“We just started the season so it will take time for my new forwards to stabilize,” he said.

As expected, each new team needs time to understand each other. However, time is never on the side of the teams vying for the title. The reason the title contenders are separated from the rest is because they start out well and fall off the pile.

That hasn’t been the case so far for Medeama after picking a point in two games.

Boadu says: “There is nothing wrong with the poor because as we know we went down with Covid and now we are preparing to go up strongly.

Certainly, if a team that is supposed to challenge for the title is now preparing to stamp their authority, then it might be a little late when they step into their mojo to make a push for the title.

Dreams win, but conversion problems still exist

Dreams FC failed to score in nine of the 15 games last season, as the team accumulated just 10 goals.

In the first game of the season against the Inter Allies, the Still Believe guys dominated and should have won the game if they took a chance.

Coach Zito says that “his team should have scored so many goals against Inter allies last week,” and then tackles the goal scoring issues.

“Putting the ball in the back of the net is the skill and ability of the player. But we coaches teach them to score. Putting the ball in the back of the net is a different matter. “

If it weren’t for the last minute penalty, it could have been a case of what could have been when Dreams FC failed to convert most of their chances.

New signing Agyenim Boateng wasted three scoring opportunities.

With Amadu and Esso also missing key occasions. At times, it almost seems indifferent as the players overcomplicate the opportunities, without making it easy.

The four forwards of Emmanuel Ocran, Boateng, Esso and Huzaif look like a work in progress with potential. Once they start taking chances, Dreams can become a team to watch this season.
