GPL: Four games to watch out for on Matchday 17

[ad_1]

The first round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season comes to an end this weekend.

Teams would love to enter the second round with momentum and good form.

Currently, Karela is in first place before the day, but could drop to fourth place depending on the results.

Hearts of Oak will begin life with Samuel Boadu as Asante Kotoko seeks to get back on the winning track.

Here are four matches from matchday 17 of the Ghana Premier League that you can’t miss this weekend:

Elmina Sharks vs. Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko knows that winning both of their games in hand will send them to the top of the league.

That will serve as additional motivation for the Porcupine Warriors who drew 0-0 with rivals Hearts of Oak on the final matchday.

The Kumasi-based team is the third-lowest scorer in the league and will need players other than Kwame Opoku to contribute in advance.

The last time Kotoko played the Sharks on the road, the Porcupines lost by a solo goal. Sharks themselves could have a hard time replicating that result due to their poor form.

The Cape Coast team are winless in their last six games and will have to be close to perfection to upset Kotoko.

Time: Friday, 18:00 GMT

Prediction: Elmina Sharks 0-2 Asante Kotoko

Oak Hearts vs WAFA

Hearts of Oak could have gotten a new lifeline with new coach Samuel Boadu.

Boadu, who took over the team, will seek to stabilize the team and attempt to challenge for the league in the second round.

The former Medeama coach has been promised that he will be in full control of affairs as phobians seek to take a new technical direction that would prioritize scouts at the club.

Salifu Ibrahim, a former member of Eleven Wonders, has been signed and will be in line to debut with the club when they face WAFA at home.

WAFA’s poor road form has been evident once again this season. The Academy boys have scored just four points in eight road games this season.

Heart’s home record has been just above average winning four of eight, but the Phobians have scored 17 goals in those matches.

Stadium: Accra Sports Stadium, Accra

Time: Sunday, 15: 00GMT

Prediction: Hearts of Oak 3-1 WAFA

Dreams FC vs Great Olympics

Dreams FC has been ruthless at home this season, making the Theater of Dreams a feared place for visitors.

The Still Believe guys have won their last five home games scoring 17 goals and conceding just four.

Joseph Esso appears to have regained his form as he is currently at the top of the top scorers list with 10 goals.

Next up is a tough draw against some very impressive Grand Olympics that have been the dark horses this season.

The Wonder guys sit in second place at the end of the first round and will be delighted to have a chance to fight for the title.

However, they will need to achieve something that they have not done in their last two away games and that is to win.

Annor Walker’s men have the third-best road record in the league, but haven’t accumulated any points in their last two attempts.

Stadium: Theater of Dreams, Dawu

Time: Sunday, 15: 00GMT

Prediction: Dreams FC 2-2 Great Olympics

Eleven Wonders vs Legon Cities

Legon Cities right now just can’t stop shopping. The Royals have so far bought Victorien Adebayor, Richmond Antwi, Hans Kwofie and Justice Anane in the second transfer window.

The club is also in the market for more players and has really set a declaration of intent. Bashir Hayford has been given the tools to grease a team that is already heating up quite a bit with his new coach.

The Accra-based team are unbeaten in seven games and have some momentum. The next big task for Hayford will be to turn ties into wins, as his team has tied four games in its unbeaten streak.

Hans Kwofie has easily adapted to the team scoring three goals in his first two games.

Eleven Wonders continue to fight with just three wins in 14 games. The club has also lost its key player, Ibrahim, who joined Hearts last week.

Coach Ignatius Fosu-Osei would have to find solutions to get his team to shoot again, as they are only two points above the relegation zone.

Stadium: Ohene Ameyaw Stadium, Techiman

Time: Sunday, 15: 00GMT

Prediction: Eleven Wonders 1-2 Legon Cities
