GPL: Five Talking Points from Day 7

[ad_1]

Hearts of Oak destroyed league leader Bechem United, WAFA won three points against Medeama in a nine-goal thriller and Legon Cities suffered another loss on Matchday 7.

Here are the five talking points

Goals, goals and more goals

The league hasn’t been short on goals this season, but Matchday 7 took things to another level.

In the Hearts of Oak v Bechem United match, there were seven goals and WAFA took all three points against Medeama after a score of 5-4.

Despite the postponement of Kotoko’s meeting with Ebusua Dwarfs, 30 goals were scored. Previously, matchday one was the highest scoring matchday with 25 goals.

The league has had its droughts, too. Matchday four was particularly difficult for all teams as they only recorded nine goals in total.

Currently, the competition has registered 138 goals in 62 matches, an average of 2.23 goals per match.

Goals bring results and this round produced an impressive number.

Daniel Lomotey sets loot records for WAFA

As the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season progressed, several players struck with braces.

Daniel Lomotey

AshantiGold were the biggest benefactors of this trend with four different players scoring two goals in one game.

But a hat-trick was missing in six rounds. Daniel Lomotey made it possible on Sunday and added one more just in case.

The WAFA forward showed his incredible shooting prowess against Medeama, scoring four goals in the 5-4 victory. He is the first player to score a hat-trick and a loot in the 2020/21 campaign.

The 21-year-old Lomotey has now moved to the top of the scorers table with seven goals. He has scored 42.86% of his team’s goals this season, which shows how important it is to their aspirations.

He will likely face competition from other forwards in the league, but the youngster has served himself up well with that performance on Sunday.

Hearts of Oak sends title warning with magnificent victory

Kosta papic

After Kosta Papic replaced Edward Nii Odoom at the helm, Hearts of Oak fans became expectant due to the pedigree of the new boss.

He had led the Phobians to a trophy in his previous term and his team is now making strides in his second term.

On Saturday, the Accra-based team decimated league leader Bechem United at home. Marker? 6-1. Before the game, Hearts of Oak had not scored five or more goals in a GPL game since October 2012.

Of course, the visitors played with ten men, but the hosts were efficient on the day.

With Papic this season, Hearts has recorded 10 points out of a possible 15. They have also jumped to fifth place.

Papic’s men are only 3 points behind league leaders Bechem United and will certainly be aiming to rise to the top of the table in the following matches.

Legon Cities endures more pain

Before the campaign, it seemed impossible that Legon Cities would have a hard time racking up some victories in the competition.

It seemed more impossible for the Royals to fight to take down their opponents. Unfortunately, both cases are happening and it is not looking good for the Accra side.

They were down to 10 men against Liberty Professionals on Sunday and suffered a 1-0 loss late in the game.

With just two goals scored in the league so far, Legon Cities is the lowest scoring team in the competition. Also, the club has not been able to find the net since open play.

Among the 18 teams battling for the GPL title this season, only Legon Cities have failed to score a win (D3 L4).

Bashir Hayford has big trouble handling in the next round of matches.

Appiah McCarthy, the king of the game

Scoring a goal is always difficult. Scoring one with a wall and a goalie in front of the net is arguably more challenging.

But Appiah McCarthy has made it look easy so far this season. The midfielder has scored three direct free throws, more than any other player.

McCarthy, 24, scored one against Karela in his team’s first game. He scored his second against Elmina Sharks and did it once again against Berekum Chelsea.

Little by little he is drawing attention to his wonderful ability in dead ball situations.

As the season progresses, you will surely expect to score more in such situations.
