Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia says the government is in talks with the University of Development Studies (UDS) to establish a satellite campus in Yendi.
In addition, he announced plans to convert the Pong Tamale Veterinary College into an agricultural university.
Vice President Bawumia announced this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Supreme Lord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II at Gbewaa Palace, Yendi, on Thursday, as part of his working visit to the northern regions.
The vice president expressed the commitment of the government led by Akufo-Addo to provide critical infrastructure such as roads, education and health services in the five northern regions.
He listed some of the flagship government interventions that had positively impacted lives, including the Free High School Policy, Plantation for Food and Jobs, and One-Village, One-Dam, One-Ambulance, One-Circumscribed.
Dr. Bawumia would commission some government projects in the five northern regions.
Earlier, Ya Na Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, praised President Akufo-Addo for ensuring the current wind of peace and stability in the Kingdom of Dagbon.
“Today is a special day in the lives of the people of the North. A moment of pride that reflects the development that Yendi, and for Dagbon, has gone through the last three years,” said Ya Na Abukari.
“His Royal Majesty Ndan Ya Na Abukari II wishes to express his gratitude for the unviable contribution of Dagbon Malti Naa I, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana and the people for ensuring the peace we enjoy today in Dagbon .
“I want to say categorically that the state of Dagbon is asserting itself with each passing day and is a factor of peace and stability in the country,” he said.
Ya Na Abukari recognized President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to Dagbon’s progress and thanked the president for his presence at last year’s Damba Festival.
“Dagbon is particularly grateful to His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for honoring last year’s Damba Featival and most importantly, his accompanied August guest, His Excellency Mia Amar Motley, QC, MP, the Prime Minister of Barbados and its senior dignitaries and Ambassadors, which automatically catapulted our previously local Damba celebration into the international arena.
“We are also deeply grateful for the launch of the Yendi water supply project in July 2020,” he added.
Ya Na praised Vice President Bawumia for his efforts to ensure development in the north.
The government officials who accompanied the vice president were; Dominic Nitiwul, Minister of Defense, Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Anthony Karbo, Deputy Minister of Roads, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Deputy Minister of Energy, Hassan Tampuli, Executive Director of the National Petroleum Authority, and Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, MASLOC Deputy Executive Director.
