Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the Akufo-Addo government is testing a current cocoa policy.
According to him, the policy has shown that farmers could increase their cocoa yield from two to ten bags per acre of land.
The vice president said this at a Wassa Atobiase chief and people durbar in the Wassa East constituency as part of his two-day tour of the Western Region.
Dr Bawumia explained that the policy results follow government investment in the cocoa sector to boost farmers’ incomes.
“We have also made fertilizers generally available to farmers, which we can confirm that it was Wassa Atobiase here that received the first batch of the national supply of fertilizers. The increased supply of fertilizers is helping farmers. We have introduced so many measures in the cocoa industry led by COCOBOD. Right now, the living income differential has raised the price of cocoa to GHS660 per bag. We are also doing manual pruning and pollination for farmers, ”said the vice president.
“We used to get two bags per acre, but fortunately a policy pilot that we are going to introduce soon shows that we can get ten bags of cocoa per acre. All this shows the new way of thinking that the NPP government has introduced. ”
COCOBOD Executive Director Boahene Aidoo, accompanying the vice president on his two-day tour, assured cocoa farmers that the government has made sufficient funds available to pay for all the sick cocoa farms that need to be cut and also compensate for the cocoa. trees and land.
