The government will spend $ 40 million to complete six district hospitals that started in 2014. This came to light at Fomena in the Adansi district in the Ashanti region yesterday when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inspected the reactivated work in the 120-bed Fomena District Hospital, one of six hospitals funded by a loan from the UK Export Fund.
The inspection was part of the president’s four-day tour of the Ashanti region.
The six hospitals, which are being built by the British design, procurement, construction and equipment company, NMS Infrastructure Limited, are located in the township of Sekondi-Takoradi, Abetifi, Garu, Kumawu, Fomena and Dodowa.
President Akufo-Addo commissioned the contractor, which is associated with a Ghanaian company, Soland 1 Limited, to complete the project on time.
It also inaugurated a 450-seat children’s dormitory for Fomena TI Ahmadiyya Upper Secondary School.
Background
With the exception of Dodowa Hospital, which has been inaugurated, the rest, which is in various stages of completion, were stopped for audit when the government changed in 2016.
The remaining five 120-bed projects, plus multi-story staff accommodation at the Takoradi-European Hospital, are expected to cost around $ 175 million.
The Fomena project, which was started in 2014 by the previous government, is expected to be ready in March next year.
The facility, which is 80% complete, has a Traditional Medicine Unit to meet the needs of patients who prefer herbal treatment.
It also has a parental room exclusively for the elderly, with health professionals trained to attend to their needs.
Contract issues
The Minister of Health, Mr. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, said that the delay in the completion of the project was due to contractual problems and financial audit, which had led to the new award of the contract.
He thanked the government for releasing funds for the completion of the delayed project.
We will deliver
The NMSI group president, Mr. Frederick Hsu, promised to finish the project in time to give the people of Adansi a new lease of life.
He assured the president of his company’s commitment to use resources wisely to achieve value for money.
Durbar
Later, in a durbar in Fomena, President Akufo-Addo assured the chiefs and people of Adansi that they would greatly benefit from the One Million Dollar Per Constituency policy in his next administration.
He said Adansiman had a good chance of getting government appointees to work with bosses to drive development.
However, he expressed his disappointment at the incumbent MP for the area, Mr. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who was elected on the New Patriotic Party (PNP) ballot but now running as an independent candidate, for ignoring his advice not to contest the election of the party, Mr. Philip Ofori Asante.
The President said that Mr. Asiamah ignoring his advice, as well as Adansihene’s, was a demonstration of his unpreparedness to work with the two and therefore urged the electorate not to vote for Mr. Asiamah.
Consult bosses
The Adansihene, Opegyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, called on the president to engage the bosses in the traditional area to weigh in on who would become the district executive director (DCE) because the current appointee had not cast the government well.
He said the current DCE and other government officials in the Adansi area had been disappointing and had nothing to show for it.
He said that instead of imposing a DCE on the people, the government should consult the bosses for relevant information to get the right people to serve.
Opegyakotwere Afriyie implored the president to ensure that his campaign promise to win the DCE election was fulfilled.
He called for legislation that would oblige successive governments to add a specific number of kilometers to the country’s road network before leaving office.
Roads
The Minister of Roads, Mr. Kwesi Amoako-Atta, said that the Adansi district was benefiting from 12 major highway projects, totaling 102 kilometers.
