The government has relaunched the GH COVID-19 tracking app, which was first launched on April 13, 2020.

The app was first launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to help boost the government’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said at the relaunch of the app on Wednesday that the purpose of the relaunch was because the app had been updated and its efficiency improved.

She said the relaunch had also become necessary following the reopening of the Kotoka International Airport, as well as the COVID-19 restrictions eased.

“Today we are here once again to relaunch an improved version of the COVID-19 symptom tracker, in light of the president’s easing of movement restrictions and the opening of airports to travelers. Our strategy of using a science and data based multi-stage COVID-19 recovery plan requires the deployment and use of digital technology and innovation to restore all sectors of Ghana’s economy to normal, ”he said.

Ms Owusu-Ekuful said that the updated tracking app will allow healthcare personnel to communicate with COVID-19 patients and track suspected cases, as well as identify COVID-19 hot spots.

“Under this relaunch platform, health personnel will be able to contact patients and track the movements of live COVID-19 cases. The new platform can also alert users to moving permitted areas, report case violations to the authorities and send automatic notifications to massive users, among others, ”he added.

Ursula said that the COVID-19 tracking app is part of the measures to harness technology to combat the spread of the disease.

He added that the new platform is accessible to everyone and not just smartphone users.

What is the GH COVID-19 Tracker App?

The COVID-19 Tracker application, through the common mobile network platform, can track the contacts of people infected by the virus, show where they have been in recent times, through various phone-related data, and link to those people with health professionals for urgent action to take.

The application, through the same data related to the phone, can also report contacts that are or have recently been in countries affected by COVID-19, as well as track whether the people who should be quarantined are in fact doing so.
