The government has rejected allegations by the Nigerian government of intimidation and mistreatment of its citizens in Ghana.

In a six-page response signed by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, he denied several of the allegations and provided detailed explanations of what has been described as mistreatment.

He said it was wrong to suggest that Nigerians were being ill-treated in Ghana.

“The Government of Ghana notes with concern a statement dated Friday, August 28, 2020, issued by the Ministry of Information and Culture and signed by Federal Minister Lai Mohammed, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, on relations current between Ghana and Nigeria.

Ghana remains committed to maintaining cordial relations with all sister nations, in particular, for well-known historical reasons, with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and will proceed to engage in discussions with the Federal Government of Nigeria with a view to solving comprehensively and exhaustively any issues that have the potential to sour relations between the two countries, ”he said.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated: “However, Ghana considers it imperative, from the outset, to declare, for the record, that the Nigerian Federal Minister’s Outline of Issues does not reflect developments in Ghana. Any protest, decision or action based on these reports will therefore be unjustified.

The deputy from Ofoase Ayeribi took the opportunity as a first step, to provide a more thoughtful account of the events, while urging both countries to seek substantive diplomatic compromises to resolve the issues.

The government also assured that President Akufo-Addo, who has excellent relations with his Nigerian counterpart, will engage with President Mohammed Buhari.

This is with a view to immediately developing a framework to validate complaints of mistreatment of citizens of either country and to ensure that citizens enjoy the full exercise of their rights while respecting the sovereignty and laws of both countries.
