Google Duo is one of the simplest applications to make video calls with friends and family, but it has been limited by the fact that it generally requires a phone number to use. Frankly, I don’t want everyone to have my phone number. Now it looks like Google is changing that requirement, thanks to a hidden Duo app change spotted by the developer Jane Manchun Wong.

Yes, it appears that Google Duo will allow people to contact you via email at last. It is unclear if this is an include or exclude feature, or if you will still have to register with a phone number, but it is still good to have at least the option to use email. Google first allowed you to make web calls with just an email account in January, but since it’s a mobile app first, it’s nice to see similar flexibility on our smartphones.
Considering the increase in Google Duo usage after the coronavirus pandemic, I’m glad to see that the company is finally paying more attention to one of its best apps. Google recently increased the number of callers who could be on one call at a time, and significantly improved video quality for low-bandwidth callers. Since people will continue to interact remotely for the foreseeable future, you can bet there are more improvements on the way.
