Myanmar’s military staged a coup on Monday and took power by arresting high-ranking politicians, including Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

An advertisement read on the military-owned Myawaddy TV said that the commander-in-chief, Major General Min Aung Hlaing, would be in charge of the country for a year.

He said the seizure was necessary because the government had failed to act on allegations of fraud by the military in the November elections.

In reaction, former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, in a post on his official Facebook page, said that the nation of Myanmar has had a long and arduous road to democracy, emphasizing that seeing the constitutional order won with so much effort and frustrated by the military coup was “heartbreaking to all true lovers of democracy.”

Jonathan condemned the violent and illegal seizure of power in the country and added that democracy “must be protected because it has proven to be the best system that allows people to have a voice in how they are governed.

“I call for the unconditional release of the democratically elected leader of Myanmar, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Aung San Suu Kyi.

“As a committed democrat, I stand in solidarity with democracy around the world and call for the return of constitutional order in Myanmar.

“I also urge all democracy lovers around the world to unite around the cause of freedom and, with one voice, call for the release of all democratically elected officials in Myanmar whose freedoms have been truncated. for this recent action. “
