Francis Torgah challenged his inexperience and a difficult course to power to a one-shot lead after a close second round of the Gold Fields Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tournament on Thursday at Damang Golf Club, Tarkwa.

Torgah, 30, played an impressive three-under 69 to put himself one shot ahead of first-round leader Lucky Ayisah, who played a one-over-par 73 and is now second in the standings.

Tied for third place and two shots behind second-placed Ayisah are local favorite Kojo Barnni and Vincent Torgah (Francis’ older brother), who played a par 73 and seven under 65 respectively.

Torgah hoping for victory

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after the day’s action, Torgah credited his powerful push and drive to his second-round recovery after finishing the first round three shots behind Ayisah.

The Tema Country Golf Club star said he was confident of improving his lead before Saturday’s final round.

“Looking at the scores, it tells you that the game is going to get harder and harder, but I promise you that I will play much better tomorrow. The field was tough because it rained during the night, but my momentum was very good and my second El shooting was good which helped me save many birdies, “he said.

Senior Contest

In senior competition, veteran Victor Brave-Mensah increased his lead at the top of the standings to ten shots after playing one-under-71.

Brave-Mensah is behind in the senior leaderboard by Akwasi Prempeh and Charles Chichi, who played three over par 75 and one over par 73 respectively.
