Ghana’s emerging Premier League force Medeama Sporting Club (SC) has signed a historic sponsorship deal worth $ 300,000 (approximately GH1,747,500) with the gold mining company Gold Fields Ghana Limited.

The all-season deal is the largest sponsorship deal involving a Premiership club and is intended to support Medeama’s participation in the 2020/2021 league and FA Cup competitions.

The agreement covers the salaries of players, managers, doctors, accommodation, food and logistics for the two-time FA Cup champions (2013 and 2015) during the upcoming football season, which begins in mid-November.

In a speech before signing the deal in Accra yesterday, Gold Fields West Africa Executive Vice President and Director Alfred Baku said the funds were expected to motivate Medeama to take its performance to the next level and cushion its finances, which have has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

Baku also promised that the mining giants would announce another package for Malva and Amarillo if they qualified for any of the African club competitions.

“We expect that the club’s management will use the funds only for the purpose stipulated in the sponsorship agreement,” Baku said.

“In accordance with Gold Fields’ sponsorship policy, we will monitor how funds will be disbursed to ensure they are used for the purpose for which they were approved. As a company that cares about members of our host communities, we will continue to support Medeama whenever I get the chance. “

He also assured that Gold Fields remains committed to supporting Medeama as it has throughout the years and that it will soon complete the reconstruction of its former headquarters (T&A Park) into an international standard stadium.

“It is also worth mentioning that Akoon Park in Tarkwa, which we recently rehabilitated, is serving as the home of Medeama. We rehabilitated Akoon Park to allow us to rebuild T&A Park to an international standard.

“The modernization of the Tarkwa sports stadium is currently underway and will receive special media coverage when it is completed. When completed, the new stadium is expected to also increase Medeama’s confidence and help discover soccer talents in our host communities. We also believe that the new stadium would turn Tarkwa into a football center in the western region, “he stated.

For his part, Medeama’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Toni Aubynn, expressed his gratitude to Gold Fields for consistently supporting the club over 10 of its 12-year history.

He also assured that the club was prepared to resume its role as a giant killer in the league and begin to achieve more success on and off the pitch.

“On behalf of the Medeama board, management and playing body, we can only be grateful for this sponsorship and the relationship between Gold Fields and its communities of which Medeama is a central part.

“We want to assure you that we will not disappoint Gold Fields and that we will strictly adhere to the terms of the sponsorship and use the funds in a way that allows us to ask for more,” he emphasized.

Medeama captain Joseph Tetteh-Zuta also promised that the high performance standards that the club had exhibited for the past two seasons would be maintained.

“Without sponsorship, football organizations are not viable and the only way we can reciprocate the goodness of Gold Fields is by winning trophies. We are privileged to receive this sponsorship and we (the players) will behave well, both inside and outside. of the field.. “
