Construction of infectious disease isolation and treatment facilities at Ga East Hospital

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has donated US $ 1 million for the construction of an infectious disease isolation and treatment center at Ga East Hospital.

Construction of the facility is being spearheaded by Ghana’s Covid-19 Private Sector Fund and is expected to be ready for use in late May, six weeks after the project begins.

When complete, the facility will be the main treatment center in Ghana for people who become seriously ill after hiring Covid-19.

GNPC Executive Director Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong says it was very easy to convince his board to approve the donation in support of the facility as part of his corporate social responsibility.

The project is estimated to cost around $ 4.5 million and Dr. Sarpong says the GNPC is very proud to have contributed almost a quarter of the cost of the project.

“The million dollar donation was approved by our board of directors to help us fight [against Covid-19]. In fact, we concluded that if steps were taken during the fight against Ebola to establish an infectious disease treatment center in the country, we may not be caught in the situation at hand where we do not. have a dedicated facility for such diseases, “said Dr. Sarpong.

“So we consider that the private sector initiative is good for us to unite, so that at least some legacy remains [from the Covid-19 pandemic]. “

After the completion of the project in Accra, Ghana’s Covid-19 Private Sector Fund promises to build similar infectious disease centers in Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale.

President Akufo-Addo has praised the fund’s initiative as very important components of the national effort to contain and stop the spread of Covid-19.

Dr. Sarpong said the GNPC is open to supporting the construction of the facilities outside of Accra.

“Subject to the approval of my board of directors, which I don’t think they will retain, we will join [the Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund] in their attempt to make similar constructions in Kumasi, Tamale and the western part of this country where the oil comes from. We join them in this regard to make sure that specifically, our contribution will be towards the delivery of these treatment facilities, ”he said.

Dr. Sarpong also added: “We need to encourage the [Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund]. We need to work with them. It is good that they are embracing the public sector like the GNPC. I am sure there are other organizations that can help you comply. The good thing about the private sector is that they do things as quickly as possible and that is one of the motivations why we join them. I want to congratulate the Trustees of the Private Sector Fund for taking the initiative. People thought that the fight was that of the government. [alone] but they have shown that much more can be done together with the government. “

Managing Trustee of Ghana’s Covid-19 Private Sector Fund, Senyo Hosi praised GNPC for helping to realize the vision of an isolation and treatment facility in Ghana.

“The nation wins when the public sector unites with the private sector and what the GNPC has done is a clear example that together we can achieve more and that together we can beat Covid-19,” Hosi said. “We are very grateful to GNPC for seeing the wisdom in this initiative and for supporting us with the funds to help make this vision a reality. We will deliver this project for good so that we all feel proud. ”

Ghana’s Covid-19 Private Sector Fund is an initiative of private entrepreneurs that created it with a seed fund of 1 million GHS while campaigning to raise at least 100 million GHS from local and international companies, as well as the public in General, to assist in the fight against Covid-19 in Ghana.
