The Secretary General of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has threatened to embark on a strike if the government does not impose restrictions on social gatherings while the increase in active cases of Covid-19 persists.
Dr. Justice Yankson, in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, on Saturday noted that health facilities are already “on their knees.”
Therefore, he reiterated calls for rigorous measures to be put in place to curb the rise of the disease.
“The issue is very simple, and we can only advise and only defend. The worst case scenario is that we put our tools aside, but that may not be the solution for this pandemic because we do not control the public purse, we do not control the executive branch. So we continue to advise the government.
The doctor further explained that; “Mind you, there are front-line government advisers, and we do our best to interact with them collectively as a group, but the final sanction for a particular activity has to come from the president.”
“So, to the extent that we have presented the case, the best we can do is continue to advocate that these social gatherings are prohibited and if the powers that be do not really act in that direction, the worst case is that we will also reject our tools because we are also tired ”, he was categorical.
The Association has already issued a statement calling on the government to ban religious services, funerals and other social gatherings.
GMA insisted that with the current trend in which an average of 600 people test positive for the virus per day, a review of the imposition of restrictions is inevitable.
Failure to comply with Covid-19 preventive measures has the potential to further increase the spread of the disease, which is why the government should impose stricter measures in the fight against the pandemic.
Meanwhile, according to the latest update from the Ghana Health Service, the country has 3,940 active cases with 390 deaths and 59,553 people have recovered from the 63,883 cases recorded so far.
