Another lockdown in Ghana is eminent if disregard for COVID-19 prevention protocols continues fragrant.

This is the opinion of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), which is concerned about the increasing number of new cases.

There are currently 1,290 active COVID-19 cases in Ghana from about 400 about three weeks ago.

Several stakeholders, including President Akufo-Addo, in his 19th national COVID-19 address, have expressed fears of dire consequences for public disregard for COVID-19 security protocols.

The Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Titus Beyuo, urged the public to observe the COVID-19 safety protocols to control the spread in the community.

“Looking at the trend, it’s worrying. Whether or not we will go to a confinement is up to all of us. If we do nothing and allow it to continue in this way, we will get there. If we do something about it, we can prevent it. [another lockdown]. What we can do is wear a nasal mask, social distancing, observe all protocols, wash hands frequently to reduce community spread. If we sit back and do nothing more than pretend that the virus is gone, we will definitely go back to where we don’t want to go, which is the lockdown stage, “he said.

The Association is also pushing for the rapid completion of the infectious disease centers in Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale.

According to the president of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Frank Ankobea, this will give a great boost to the provision of quality healthcare in the country.

“We cannot afford to lower our guard. The GMA calls on the national COVID-19 trust fund and other stakeholders to accelerate action on the construction of the infectious disease centers in Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi. Again as a country, let’s continue investing and strengthening our laboratories as COVID-19 exposed our laboratory system as one of the weakest links in the health sector ”.

Dr. Frank Ankobea also wants politicians to talk about COVID-19 security protocols during his political rallies.

“We have always maintained that we must strictly adhere to safety protocols, one of them is the use of nasal masks and the others maintain social distancing and wash hands with running water regularly. Unfortunately, our politicians don’t help us. You see massive campaigns and you see people who are not wearing masks and all that and this is likely to help spread the virus. Therefore, we will ask our politicians to provide masks to the people who come to hear them. And we would be very happy if any politician who comes up on the platform should first speak about COVID-19 prevention before giving his message, “he added.
