The Ghana Journalists Association (GFA) has commended media professionals for the good work they have done in their coverage of the 2020 general election, asking the public to help defend journalists from The attacks.
While many civil society organizations also agree with the unparalleled professionalism and quality displayed by the media, the elections did not end without some journalists being attacked in the line of duty.
Taking attacks on journalists seriously, the GJA says it is time for the general public to help protect members of the kingdom’s fourth estate.
“….. nothing justifies the verbal attacks, flagrant threats and cyberbullying that are being perpetrated against certain journalists and the media for fulfilling their electoral duty and executing their constitutional mandate. The anti-media concoction that is bubbling in certain political circles is contrary to press freedom and dangerous to our democracy.
“This must end immediately. We also demand that it is time for the conscientious and obedient citizens of this country to stand up and defend the media from any ‘bullet attacks’ and ‘blood calls’ directed at journalists, ”part of a press release from the GJA signed by President Mr. Affail Monney has said.
Meanwhile, the country’s general group of journalists has accused the practitioners of being brave and continuing to do their work to defuse tension after the elections.
“The GJA encourages all journalists to carry out their professional work without fear and without intimidation. They must also inject the highest degree of circumspection into their work and do nothing to fan the flames of tension or fan the embers of violence.
“Finally, the GJA calls on the media community to give their full support to the movements to calm things down and lift the nation off the cliff it is on,” the press release concludes.
