Ryan Giggs has revealed that he was close to leaving Manchester United at the end of the 2003-04 season.
Giggs spent his entire professional career at Old Trafford, signed his first contract in 1990 and then scored 114 goals in 672 appearances.
The Welshman won 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues before finally hanging up his boots at the age of 40 in 2014.
However, he admits that his career at United could have ended 10 years earlier.
When asked if he was ever close to leaving, Giggs said during the second episode of the beIN SPORTS Champions Club: ‘Yes, around 2003/2004 I didn’t have a good start to the season.
‘It was the summer that David Beckham was in, that was probably the closest I had to go.
“ My form wasn’t great, and it was the transition period where I went from being a flying winger to going a little deeper. He had lost that rhythm. I actually ended the season quite strongly. If the season hadn’t ended strong, who knows?
“But other than that, there really wasn’t a time when the manager said that I wasn’t okay.”
“ I was in and out of the team towards the end of my career, but I was used to it. He was fine with that. I was between 35 and 40 years old, I was fine, and I realized pretty quickly about that, that I would go in and out of the team ‘
