The Ghana Health Service (GHS) will begin a national yellow fever vaccination exercise from November 12-18, 2020.

The exercise would be aimed at the public between 10 and 60 years old.

Ms. Irena Offei, Acting Deputy Regional Director of Public Health Eastern, announced this at a press conference in Koforidua.

Although Ghana has not recorded yellow fever since 2012, suspected cases had recently been detected in parts of the country, the vaccination exercise was a precautionary measure.

Ms Offei said that vaccination against yellow fever is for life according to the protocols of the World Health Organization (WHO).

He explained that those 0 to 9 years old were excluded because they were covered by the routine childhood vaccination schedule.

She revealed that more than one million people would be vaccinated in the Eastern Region and asked for public support.

The acting deputy director refuted speculations that the yellow fever vaccination exercise was a coronavirus vaccination trial.

He said the world was not done with a coronavirus vaccine, much less a trial and urged those who had never been vaccinated against yellow fever to do so because it was a deadly disease.

Ms. Offei assured that all coronavirus prevention protocols will be strictly adhered to for the safety of the public and health personnel as well.
