The Ghana Surveyors Institution (GhIS) along with other professional institutions in the built environment is facilitating the construction of a US $ 4.5 million 100-bed Infectious Disease Center for the Ga East Municipal Hospital in Kwabenya.

The project, which is expected to be completed in six weeks, is funded with contributions from Ghana’s private sector as its support to complement the government’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the GhIS provides free consultancy for the project, while the 48th Regiment of Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces is overseeing the project.

Dr. John Amaglo, President of GhIS, speaking to the media during a visit by the Institution’s executives to the site, asked the government to work with the country’s professional institutions in the built environment to allow them to develop their capacity and save the nation. due to the high cost of hiring foreign consultants for government projects.

He said that the nation’s professionals, such as surveyors, architects, planners, and engineers, were capable of performing at the highest level on any project assigned to them.

He explained that the GhIS is offering pro-bono consulting to the project as its contribution to complement the government’s effort in the fight against Coronavirus disease.

Dr. Amaglo also said that in difficult times like these it is important to bring together the best professionals to help build the 100-bed Infectious Disease Center to serve as the isolation and treatment center for COVID-19 cases.

Mr. Senyo Hosi, Managing Trustee of the Ghana Private Sector Fund COVID-19, key partners of the Fund, said the members had been kind and generous in donating to the project.

He said that despite the very difficult times when companies were struggling and personal financing was challenging, people had identified with the project and found time and energy to donate.

He praised GhIS and other professional institutions such as the Ghana Institute of Architects, Planners and Engineers for their time and dedication to the project.

“If you look at all the professionals who have worked on the project, they have dedicated their invaluable time to making sure we are where we are today,” he added.

Hosi expressed the hope that the project will serve as a benchmark or model that governments and major construction players in the country would use to redirect their views on the country’s technical professionals.

He urged the government to continue working with the country’s professional institutions to allow it to save money in terms of hiring foreign consultants for its projects.
