Vice President Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia says that the Volta secessionists claiming parts of the region like western Togo are living in an imaginary world.
According to him, the history of Ghana does not support the ideas and claims of these people who cause problems in the Volta region.
Speaking about Ekosiisen on Asempa FM on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia said that the boundaries of Ghana were already determined when people in Trans Volta Togoland in 1956 voted to be part of the country before gaining independence in 1957.
“The area they call Western Togoland today must be the product of your imagination. There is no, there is no legal basis for their claims, ”he told the show’s host, OB.
He added that there is no debate on whether the region is part of Ghana or not.
Dr. Bawumia stated that the activities of these people are nothing more than criminal attacks that must be dealt with.
His comment comes after the Volta secessionist group in the early hours of Friday, September 25, blocked the main entrances to the Volta region claiming independence as Western Western Togo.
The secessionists also attacked the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the North Tongu district of the Volta region.
A member of the group was reportedly killed in a shootout with the joint security team that had been deployed to restore calm.
On Saturday, people also found another dead man. Initial police investigations revealed that he may have been caught in the shooting.
Thirty-one people were arrested and flown to the offices of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in Accra for questioning about developments in the region.
Late on Monday, a group of armed men believed to belong to a separatist group from Volta launched another attack on the facilities of the state transport company in Ho.
However, the separatist group Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), which had declared western Togoland’s independence earlier this year, issued a statement denying the attack on the STC facilities.
In a Facebook post to express its displeasure, the group accused outside forces of perpetrating violence to smear its peaceful campaign.
“We said it was time without numbers that the campaign for our citizenship rights, which is continually being questioned by some sector of the Ghanaians, will not have violence,” reads part of the post.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia said he is confident that no part of Ghana will be handed over to the group.
He added that the government will not negotiate with the separatists and added that they have no basis for their struggle.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that the security agencies are working hard to intercept many of the plans that these separatists will carry out.
“The agencies are doing a lot, it is not all we can say on air. I feel very comfortable with his work. In fact, they have frustrated things that could have been worse, ”he added.
The vice president urged Ghanaians to come together to support security agencies to help end the activities of the separatists.
