The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, announced Tuesday that the country has the highest recovery rate of Covid-19 due to comprehensive standards set by the Service.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said that about 130 patients were awaiting their second positive tests to declare complete recovery from the virus, compared to other countries that normally perform only one positive case test to declare complete recovery.

The Director General made the comments in response to a question about home administration of patients with Covid-19 during the press conference on case updates in the country.

He said GHS can review the double-test protocol when the need arises, noting that the recovery rate was slow due to the double-test approach.

He said an evaluation of the probability that patients who tested positive first could test negative on their second test turned out to be negligible.

According to the GHS, 494 patients with Covid-19 recovered from the count of 5,127 cases registered on May 10.

Of the total, 4,611 were active cases with 22 registered deaths, which represents a mortality rate of 0.43 percent.

In regional statistics, Greater Accra registered 89 new cases, while the Ashanti region has 307 new cases. The central region registered 27 new cases and the western and Volta regions registered three and one new cases respectively.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye explained that the majority of patients receiving home treatment were in good condition.

Referring to the death rate, he said that two autopsies have been performed so far and that the Service has not yet received the report, adding that “the report is necessary because it helps us learn and improve future use.”
