President Akufo-Addo says he is confident that Ghana’s locally made gin, popularly known as ‘celery’, is one of the high-export products the nation can harness to grow the economy.

The president said this in his second-term inauguration speech on Thursday, January 7, 2021, emphasizing the need for Ghana to aggressively pursue self-reliance.

Speaking of the prospects of Ghana becoming an exporter, Chairman Akufo-Addo mentioned that Eku fruit juice produced by Ekumfi Fruit Juices Company Limited operates under the policy of One District One Factory.

He further added that a locally produced well-branded gin popularly known as “celery / akpeteshi” has the potential to compete in the world market.

“I doubt that anyone would normally mention akpeteshie, the local gin, as a possible item on the world market. I cannot vouch for its taste or potency as I gave up alcohol many years ago.

“But I can say that the Made in Ghana and the beautifully packaged ‘Celery’ that I have seen recently can compete in the world’s most sophisticated markets,” said President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo in his first term initiated the policy of One District One Factory to pursue industrialization in the country.

The policy exists to ensure the establishment of new factories and the revitalization of old ones throughout the country.
