A section of Ghanaians has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for publishing details of their voter registration online.

Speaking to JoyNews, those interviewed said they were dismayed that their personal information, including their age, had been posted online.

The move, they say, violates the country’s data protection laws.

“There are some people who want their information like names, age, etc. to be hidden, so putting it online will be a problem for them,” said one.

Another added: “It’s my own secret, so why should they post it like this? I think everyone should have been given a unique password so they could individually access their own information online. “

The Election Commission published the full list of voters on its website over the weekend, as stipulated by law, but since publication, the Commission has received a strong reaction from some Ghanaians.

However, the executive director of the Data Protection Commission, Patricia Edusei Poku, said that although the EC did not violate data protection laws by publishing the voter registration online, it should have informed the electorate of its decision to do so. .

Ms. Edusei-Poku also pointed out that the EC should also have made reference to the law that allowed it to publish the data.

EC President Jean Mensah on Tuesday justified the decision to publish the full details of the people captured in the electoral roll by stating that “CI 127 requires that the provisional electoral roll be published on our website.

“That same law establishes that the definitive registry is published in the manner that the Commission deems appropriate.”

According to her, making the registry public will guarantee transparency in the electoral process.
