Some Ghanaian returnees have asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a special voter registration exercise so that they can participate in the December 7 elections.
Leading the way as the Returned Ghanaian Collation, the group is comprised of Ghanaians who were unable to participate in the voter registration exercise recently conducted because they were observing mandatory quarantine or were not yet returning to Ghana due to the border closure.
In a statement, the group stated that, “Most of us were observing the mandatory 14-day quarantine or had not yet returned to Ghana. Although we were assured that special arrangements would be made for us, nothing is forthcoming. “
“We understand that as long as we arrive in Ghana at least three months before the general elections, special arrangements will be made for those people to register, but it seems that that guarantee does not arrive.”
Before the latest petition to the EC, the group’s leader, Kingsley Dunyo Kingsley, had expressed concern about the possibility that Ghanaians stranded abroad would be deprived of their rights.
The compilation of a new voter registration began on Tuesday, June 30, and ended on Tuesday, August 6, 2020.
However, due to the temporary closure of Ghana’s borders to the international community in March 2020, following the COVID-19 outbreak to minimize the spread, Ghanaians who were abroad were unable to participate in the registration process.
