The National Commission for Small Arms and Light Weapons is optimistic that Ghana will witness a violence-free elections on 7 December.
The Commission believes that the country’s security agencies are fully prepared to quell any violence that may occur before, during and after the elections.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Jones Applerh in a Citi News Interview said that although Ghana is in a volatile region, its elections will not witness violence.
“I don’t think we are going to have violent elections. I believe that our elections will be conducted peacefully. It is no one’s doing in Ghana to live in a volatile region, a region where there are many weapons. The security agencies are very focused, aware, and up to the task. ”
The National Commission for Small Arms and Light Weapons is collaborating with the Police Service as part of efforts to ensure an incident-free election.
Inspector General of Police James Oppong Boanuh has indicated that 62,794 security personnel will be deployed to provide security for the 2020 general election.
He said they will include police officers, military officers and personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Fire Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority, among others.
A total of 6,178 flash points they have also been identified for a special security arrangement.
“Our approach in these areas will be slightly different than in other areas. Saturated patrols and reserve forces will be visible to avoid any mishap. Hotspots and strategies to manage them will be reviewed based on emerging trends or issues, ”James Oppong Boanuh said while addressing a press conference on security arrangements regarding the polls on Wednesday, November 4.
