Sports Minister-designate Mustapha Ussif says Ghana will establish a new university dedicated to sports development after hosting the 2023 African Games.
The university, he said, will help improve sports development in Ghana and, by extension, West Africa.
During his vetting at the Parliament Nominating Committee on Thursday February 25, 2021, Mr. Ussif said that when Ghana won the bid to host the African Games, the government through the ministry decided that after the event, the Infrastructure facilities that will be put in place to host the event will become a university.
Ussif, who is also a member of Parliament for the Yagaba-Kubori New Patriotic Party (PNP) in the northeast region, said the Ministry will establish an Olympic Village to host the event and that the Olympic Village will become a university for sports development. .
“We are creating a subcommittee to analyze the development of the infrastructure. We are going to set up, if we have the opportunity, an Olympic Village; and the Olympic Village will come with facilities that after the games, will serve as a university for sports development”, explained.
When asked if the establishment of the university was the plan of the Ministry, Mr. Ussif replied in the affirmative, saying “Yes, Mr. President, that is the plan of the ministry according to the briefings I have received.”
He added that when President Akufo-Addo himself inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the games, he made an “emphatic statement that after the games, we will use the facility to establish a university for sports development; that will be the second university. of sports across Africa. “
Responding to what will happen to Winneba Sports College after the establishment of the new university for sports development, he said: “This will be a completely new facility that we are going to install for the games, but after the games, we have to use the facilities and the government’s policy is that we will convert the facility into a university for sports development. “
He felt that the new university was important because there was no such university in all of West Africa dedicated to sport, and said that “what we currently have is a university in Winneba.
Mr Ussif also hinted that Ghana is poised to make some progress at the 2023 African Games, saying: “We don’t just want to host the Africa Cup of Nations without winning medals, adding that” the government is committed to hosting the best African games in the country. “
