Ghana Statistical Services begins training ahead of 2021 population and housing census

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has started the final phase of ‘Master Trainers’ training for the 2021 Population and Housing Census (APS) in Winneba.

The face-to-face training workshop on computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI) would take place over 8 days, from December 9 to 16, 2020.

Follow a nine-day virtual training program, which took place between November 23 and December 3, 2020.

A statement from the GSS said the CAPI training was necessary because the next 2021 APS, which is scheduled for April and May 2021, was a digital census that involved the use of tablets (Computer Assisted Personal Interview – CAPI) for electronic data. . capture and sync.

As such, trainers for APS 2021 should be proficient in the use of tablets in addition to the content of the questionnaire and the enumeration procedures.

In total, 127 potential teacher trainers are participating in the workshop, which will include evaluations to determine the participants who will be selected as teacher trainers for APS 2021.

The Master Trainers are on the cusp of a four-tier training strategy for APS 2021 that aims to train approximately 75,000 field officers to collect data.

Master Trainers will train national trainers, who in turn will train regional trainers who will directly train field officers.

At the opening ceremony of the training, the Chief of Census Methodology, Mr. Owusu Kagya, welcomed the participants on behalf of the Ghana Statistical Service Administration and the training team.

He pleaded with the participants to take the training seriously because the census work was demanding and required commitment.

He said the main purpose of the census was to collect credible usable data for decision making and as such effective training was key to making this possible.

The Head of the National Census Secretariat, Mr. George Emmanuel Ossei also emphasized the importance of the exercise and the need for participants to observe all health and safety protocols.

The conduct of the census is in line with the objectives of the Ghana Statistical Service to provide quality, relevant, accurate and timely statistical information for national development as stipulated in Clause 3 of the Statistical Service Act 2019 (Act 1003) and oversight of capacity building. in the statistical ecosystem.
