Ghana remembers Chelsea misfit Baba Rahman as ‘older’ return to Sudan with double heads

The full-back has been called up for the first time since he played at Afcon 2019, alongside returnees Harrison Afful and John Boye.

Ghana called up Chelsea left-back Abdul Rahman Baba for next month’s 2022 African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sudan.

The 26-year-old, who has been demoted to the Blues’ second team after failing to secure a move in the recent transfer window, is returning to national team service for the first time since Afcon 2019 in Egypt.

The 23-man team was announced on Friday.

Metz defender John Boye, who also last played for Ghana at Afcon 2019, Columbus Crew right-back Harrison Afful, who last played for the Black Stars against Ethiopia in 2018, and Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp, who last played for all four games. African champions time in March 2019, have also been retired.

Greuther Furth forward Jamie Leweling, 19, who has played for Germany in the U19 and U20 categories, has been called up by Ghana for the first time.

Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew and Guimaraes left-back Gideon Mensah, who recently recovered from the coronavirus, have also been called up after contracting the infection while on international service with Ghana in friendlies against Mali and Qatar.

Celta de Vigo central Joseph Aidoo and Trabzonspor striker Caleb Ekuban, who also contracted coronavirus in the last assembly in Ghana, have also been summoned, although there has been no announcement of the recovery of Covid-19 by the players or of their clubs.

However, Ghana coach CK Akonnor has not called up Besiktas midfielder Bernard Mensah or Hoffenheim central Kasim Adams Nuhu, who also tested positive for Covid-19 after the October friendlies in which the Black Stars lost. 3-0 against Mali and beat Qatar 5- 1.

Ajax prodigy Mohammed Kudus has also been sidelined after recently sustaining a meniscus injury while playing in the Champions League against Liverpool. Southampton central defender Mohammed Salisu has also not been called up as he continues his long journey to get in shape at the Premier League club.

Ghana currently leads Afcon 2022 qualifying Group C with six points after securing all points in their first two games against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

The Black Stars will host Sudan for the first time at Cape Coast in the first match on November 12 before traveling for the return match a few days later.
