Elmina Sharks ended her six-match winless streak in the Ghana Premier League by inflicting a first away loss on Asante Kotoko at Nduom Sports Stadium on Friday night.

The Sharks won the close contest 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Mustapha Alhaji. The 30-year-old scored after a brilliant counterattack in the 55th minute.

The victory is Odartey Lamptey’s first as the Sharks’ head coach. The former Ghanaian international has been in charge for seven days as he was appointed following the resignation of Yaw Acheampong.

Lamptey’s game plan worked perfectly. He decided to sit deep and play on the fast break, with one of them resulting in the goal.

Johnson Smith, who was in the opposite dugout, saw his team frustrated, especially when they were pushing for the tie. The Sharks fought back very well to claim their first three points from Matchday 10.

Kotoko’s best chance of the game fell to Kwame Opoku in the first half. The forward pounced on a loose ball, circled the goalkeeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by the Sharks defender.

The result leaves Kotoko in sixth position, four points behind leader Karela United, yet the Porcupine Warriors have two standout games.

For the sharks, it’s a huge win that sees them go up to 13th with 20 points, five clear the relegation zone.
