Karela United FC came back to beat AshantiGold SC 2-2 on matchday one of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

The Miners welcomed Karela United to Obuasi Len Clay Stadium for the opening game of the campaign with the goal of starting the season with a victory.

But it was Karela United who raised their tail after just 4 minutes on the clock after goalkeeper Mohammed Bailou, Mohammed Bailou, shot Taylor Diawusie’s powerful low shot.

In the 18th minute, Diawusie almost scored his second goal of the game, but failed to direct a high cross from Richard Berko into the net.

AshantiGold SC found their groove right after Diawusie’s failure as they dominated their opponents but couldn’t find a tie.

Relentless pressure from the hosts paid off in the 22nd minute after Appiah McCarthy drove a brilliant free kick out of reach of goalkeeper Yaw Fufuro-Ansah to restore parity.

AshantiGold took a big hit two minutes after getting the tie when midfielder Samed Ibrahim stretched out of bounds and was replaced by Michael Enu.

Coach Milovan Cirkovic took another blow after Mark Agyekum called for his substitution after suffering an injury. He was replaced by Eric Esso in the 29th minute.

With the end of the first half in favor of Karela United FC, Hans Kwoffie headed AshantiGold up front after connecting wonderfully with Bashiru’s whip in the 23rd minute.

Karela United came back from recess determined to get back into the game as they asked their opponents many questions.

Anyinase’s team deservedly achieved the equalizer thanks to substitute Samuel Ofori in the 59th minute with a superb delicate touch in the penalty area. He was assisted by the impressive Umar Bashiru.

AshantiGold improved and nearly regained their lead in the 61st minute, but Appiah McCarthy’s free kick went wide.

The hosts pressed for the winner in the late embers of the game, but were unable to break through Karela United’s tenacious defense when the match ended 2-2.

The result takes AshantiGold and Karela United to sixth and eighth places respectively.
