The Ghana Police Service has fired 28 staff members for demonstrating lack of professionalism.
This was due to complaints made by the public, of which they were found guilty.
The total of 181 cases of unprofessional conduct that were registered, was from January to August 2020.
Ghana Police Service Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman, said some of the misconduct was insubordination, being drunk while on duty, and conducting part-time business outside the Service without permission.
Others were negligent, resulting in a prisoner escaping from legal custody, not entering official documents, misusing a firearm, and being absent from duty without permission.
Ms. Abayie-Buckman said the officers affected were from the ranks of Constable to Assistant Police Commissioner; “Agent, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent and Deputy Commissioner of Police.”
During investigations, 151 of the reported cases were found to be partially true and, apart from the 28 officers who were fired, some had their ranks reduced, he said.
Ms. Abayie-Buckman said that in 2019, of the 291 complaints filed against police officers, 191 were found guilty.
He said disciplinary actions were taken to maintain high standards of professionalism in the Service.
Meanwhile, several staff members, including 43 from Headquarters, were praised for their exemplary conduct between January and August 2020, it said.
“The Police Administration is making efforts to educate men and women about the need to exhibit professionalism at all times,” said Ms. Abayie-Buckman.
“The Service will not protect any personnel who misbehave in the performance of their duty to discredit the name of the Service.”
He urged the public not to hesitate to expose the misconduct of any police personnel by reporting to the appropriate rooms, adding that they should not only condemn the police when they miss their mark, but also praise those who carried out their duties. on a professional way.
