Ghana celebrated the 19th anniversary of the Accra Sports Stadium disaster that killed 127 soccer fans in 2001 on Saturday.
In a statement commemorating the day, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said it remains committed to honoring the memory of the fallen as it continues its efforts to improve safety standards at gaming venues.
He appealed to all soccer-loving Ghanaian football administrators, security officers, doctors and doctors to cooperate with the federation to ensure that the nation does not experience such incidents in the game again.
“Let us constantly remember that such a tragedy should never again occur in our beautiful game and our beloved nation,” the statement said.
All 127 fans died on May 9, 2001, in an incident during a local Premier League match between archrivals Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
Police fired tear gas at the stands in their efforts to control the fans, resulting in a stampede during which the fans lost their lives trying to escape.
Hundreds of other fans were seriously injured during the incident, which has been dubbed the worst stadium disaster in Africa.
