Ghana’s hopes of trying to lure Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey into a change of nationality appear to be fading as the youngster made his appearance for the England Under-21 team over the weekend.

The 20-year-old played 90 minutes for the England Under-21 team in a 3-1 win over Andorra at Molineux.

Goals from Curtis Jones, Ben Wilmot and a penalty from Lamptey’s ex-Chelsea teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi ensured victory for Aidy Boothroyd’s side.

It was the second international match for the former Chelsea academy graduate for the national youth team.

Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku has confirmed talks with England’s youth defender Tariq Lamptey about a change of nationality.

The 20-year-old has drawn attention after his explosive form with Brighton in the English Premier League so far.

The former Chelsea star has represented England at various youth levels and West Africans must go through a process stipulated by FIFA in order for him to change nationality.

“Someone like Tariq Lamptey has been talking to his family to make sure that having identified him as a top talent we will bring him in to represent our county. Along the same lines, other people are also talking to him and his family to represent another country.

“It’s not that easy and fast. We are following all the great Ghanaian talents you may have seen on your screens and may not have seen.”

He has represented the European country in the U-18, 19, 20 and 21 categories, but faces a huge decision in his full-blown international career with Ghana knocking on his door.
