The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will hold its 26th Ordinary Congress today to make decisions about the future of football.
Scheduled for the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram, the one-day event will be honored by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, who is expected to explain in more detail why soccer is still placed in the “freezer “.
Soccer activities have been suspended in the country since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic with Ghana’s top flight and all other soccer competitions closed.
The GFA had tentatively set October for the start of the 2020/2021 soccer season in hopes that the government would lift restrictions on the game ahead of time.
However, during her 16th address to the nation on Sunday on measures taken by the government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo extended the wait until an unknown date, sparking a debate between the game’s stakeholders, most of whom were furious about the situation.
According to the president, “in the coming weeks a decision will also be made on the resumption of contact sports, including football, taking into account the imminent participation of our national teams in international competitions.”
President Akufo-Addo said he acknowledged the devastation that the absence of the game had caused and shared his hope that the people of Ghana will have the pleasure of enjoying playing and watching football in the country again.
“As a well-known soccer lover, I know how devastating his absence has been, and I am hopeful that very soon we will all have the pleasure of playing and seeing the beautiful match again. Until then, non-contact sports are the only ones. Sports events are allowed, “he said.
Today’s congress, without a hint of doubt, will have a good meal on the subject.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has instituted a ban on various public and social activities aimed primarily at reducing human contact and promoting social distancing.
Meanwhile, the GFA has informed members and all stakeholders that the association will fully comply with all COVID-19 security protocols at today’s congress.
“Thermometers, handwash buckets, hand sanitizers and other personnel prevention equipment (PPE) will be provided in Congress,” he said.
Tight security measures will be applied in place from the entrance to the main hall to ensure that members of congress, guests and accredited media, men and women, go through the health and safety procedures implemented successfully.
He cautioned that only accredited representatives designated by members of Congress will be allowed to enter the premises of Congress in accordance with the Social Distancing Protocols.
“Delegates are reminded that there is no mask, no ticket.”
