The International Telecommunication Union is supporting Ghana to establish digital transformation centers in some 241 community ICT centers across the country.

The project, in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication, GIFC is expected to train more than 14,000 beneficiaries with basic digital skills to expand their businesses.

The basic objective of the project is to close the digital skills gap between rural and urban communities in the country.

In a short ceremony to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the project, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekuful hinted that without the necessary digital skills, many people will be denied the benefit of various government digital interventions.

The minister also revealed that the government has received a credit line to finance the construction of rural telephony sites and internet connectivity infrastructure for more than 2,000 communities in the country.

The program, which is expected to connect some three million citizens to Internet access, will be completed in the next 18 months.

The ITU project with the support of CISCO and the Norwegian government aims to ensure that digital skills are no longer a barrier for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in developing economies.

The Digital Transformation Center will also be used by the World Food Program to train around 1 million farmers and workers in the food value chain.

Meanwhile, there are already some women’s and youth groups benefiting from the Dodowa and Assin Fosu ICT Community Centers project.
