The governing body of national football has published an updated program of the 2020-21 football season
The 2020-21 Ghana Premier League start date has been rescheduled for November, the Football Association (GFA) announced.
The start has been set for the weekend of November 13-16.
The news comes on the back of concerns about the October 30 start schedule announced by Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during a state of the nation address on Sunday.
The November restart will mark the return of the top flight for the first time since March, when soccer was suspended nationally due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“The Ghana Football Association is pleased to announce that the 2020-2021 season will begin in November,” the GFA posted on its official website on Thursday.
“This follows the government’s decision to give the green light to the resumption of football.
“The Nations flagship competition, the Ghana Premier League, is expected to start from Friday, November 13, 2020. While the Division One League begins on December 3, 2020. The Women’s Premier League is scheduled to begin January 2, 2021.
“It has been more than six months since football in Ghana was stopped due to Covid-19 and with the game set to resume, many are expecting a great comeback, seeing how exciting the canceled season was.”
At the week 15 stage, the 2019-20 GPL season was temporarily halted in March for security reasons after Ghana recorded its first coronavirus cases and a national ban on all public gatherings, including the football.
In June, the GFA Executive Council made the decision to definitively cancel the term due to uncertainty about a possible restart date.
On Sunday, Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo lifted the soccer ban and announced October 30 as the date for the start of a new soccer season, 2020-21.
However, there have been concerns about the October date as many stakeholders believe that teams will not have enough time to adequately prepare for the challenge ahead.
As part of Ghana’s return-to-play protocol, “Spectators will not be allowed in team training centers, seating capacity in all stadiums will be limited to 25% during matches to ensure social distancing, while spectators in the stadiums will wear masks. ” .
