Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku has confirmed talks with England’s youth defender Tariq Lamptey about a change of nationality.
The 20-year-old has drawn attention after his explosive form with Brighton in the English Premier League so far.
The former Chelsea star has represented England at various youth levels and West Africans must go through a process stipulated by FIFA before he can change his nationality.
He has represented the European country in the U-18, 19, 20 and 21 categories, but faces a massive decision in his full-blown international career with Ghana knocking on his door.
And Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has confirmed that talks have intensified for the highly-skilled right-back to switch nationality to the African giants.
“The national teams are for Ghanaians. It does not refer only to those who reside in Ghana only, but to all Ghanaians in the world, so it would be suicidal not to search all parts of the world to find the right talent for Ghana. If we find the talent and the coach is there please, we need to bring that talent, “said Okraku.
We work closely with all the great talents you have seen on your screens and those you haven’t seen. But we also need to understand the atmosphere that surrounds some of those players. Some are classified.
“Someone like Tariq Lamptey have been talking to his family to make sure that having identified him as a top talent we will bring him in to represent our county. Along the same lines, other people are also talking to him and his family to represent another country.
“It’s not that quick and easy. We are following all the great Ghanaian talents that you may have seen on your screens and that you haven’t seen.
“I haven’t seen Jamie before, but he’s coming for us to attack him from close range, so we leave no stone unturned.
“We have immediate battles to win and then future battles and we have to deal with both battles. And the players that the coach thinks will represent our interest for the immediate battle are the ones he is inviting.”
Born to Ghanaian parents in London, the exciting young man has caught the attention of Ghana’s soccer leaders with a streak of excellent performances at the club level.
