The head of the European Union delegation to Ghana, Ambassador Diana Acconcia, has refuted reports that the Ghanaian embassy in Belgium was ordered to close its accounts with the INK Bank due to the EU listing the country. black.
According to Ambassador Acconcia, it was a purely commercial decision made by the bank.
Speaking on Asaase Radio on Monday, October 12, 2020, he explained that “the fact that the account of the Ghanaian Embassy in Belgium and the European Union has been closed by a Belgian bank, was a business decision taken by the bank. The bank was not at all obliged by the EU to close the Embassy account ”.
He added that: “It was a business decision to apply more checks to the Embassy. The listing does not affect trade, development aid and there will be no problem paying for budget support and the main projects we have in Ghana…. Ghana is already doing a lot because there is the Financial Intelligence Center in the Central Bank, among others, to verify some of these things. “
Ambassador Acconcia further stated that her team’s commitment to Ghana as a key development partner has seen the EU advance € 87 million to the government as a grant to alleviate the difficult situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Covid is a global threat, but we must respond together. If our partners, particularly Africa, sink, we all sink together. We give 87 million euros to Ghana. Ghana reached out to development partners for help and we looked for resources.
This support is not tied to any particular action that Ghana should take. The money will be paid in a few days to the Ghana treasury. It will be up to the government to decide what to do with it. “
He stressed: “It is important to say that this is a subsidy, so it does not add to the government debt. Basically, it is to make up for the loss of income that Ghana has suffered due to the pandemic. It is an extraordinary measure that we do not normally do. We have conducted our own public financial management assessment and Ghana is an eligible recipient. “
