The Ghana Infectious Diseases Center (GIDC) will open to receive patients in the coming weeks, announced President Akufo-Addo.

The Center was built to enhance Ghana’s medical, diagnostic and research capabilities with regard to infectious diseases.

However, after a recent increase in active Covid-19 cases in the country, President Akufo-Addo says that it has become necessary for the place to be open to receive patients.

“As our hospitalization rates are very low, caring for the sick and providing treatment remains an important aspect of our strategy,” he said.

The facility, President Akufo-Addo has said, will be managed by the Ghana Health Service.

The hundred-bed facility was built due to the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Its establishment was facilitated by the Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces.

In his 19th address to the nation on measures taken to control the spread of Covid-19, President Akufo-Addo paved the way for the Center to begin operating.

It will operate “under the direction of the Ghana Health Service,” he said.

Ghana Covid situation

Meanwhile, active Covid-19 cases in Ghana rose to 1,139 as of Friday, November 6.

The president blamed the current situation on the public’s failure to strictly adhere to Covid-19 protocols.

Still, he says the government is committed to doing its part to keep the virus under control.

He added that it is also up to the general public to contribute their quota to completely eliminate the virus, strictly adhering to security protocols.

In addition, he noted that the provision of adequate medicines, equipment and personal protective equipment has also been guaranteed for health workers to care for patients at home.
