The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) warned young people to desist from participating in illegal acts that disturb the peace of the country.

Roland Affail Monney, president of the association that gave advice on the celebration of the International Day of Peace, asked young people to help protect the democratic gains that Ghana has made over the years.

The United Nations has dedicated September 21 to strengthening peace around the world: this year’s day was celebrated with the global theme: “Forming Peace Together: The Role of Youth in Peacebuilding.”

It was organized by the National Peace Council (NPC) in collaboration with the GJA and the Auntie Is Merkezi Organization (AIMO) and attracted organizations from civil society, the business community, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Information, the Authority National Youth, political parties, authorities and religious leaders, among others.

Monney said statistics show the nation has a young age structure, with about 57 percent under the age of 25, which clearly vindicates the righteousness of focusing the celebration on youth.

He observed that during elections, politicians had a propensity to use youth to perpetuate and incite violence, a situation which, he noted, was a threat to national elections and democracy.

Instead, Monney said that young people should channel that energy into companies that would help in their personal development and that of the country.

For his part, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, a board member of the National Peace Council (NPC), called on political parties to stop bussing people from external constituencies for political gain and stated that “ They must respect the Code of Conduct and Surveillance and Related Crimes Law 999.

He called on citizens to avoid excessive language and refrain from serving “power-hungry politicians” who would only lead them to destruction, and asked the media to exercise maximum restraint and be circumspect so as not to sink the country in chaos.

Maulvi Bin Salih also urged religious and traditional institutions to join forces to maintain peace in the country.

Later, an emblem of peace was unveiled on the occasion of the event.
