The government’s quest to make the Ghana Card the sole source of identification for people living in Ghana and to access public services has received a major boost following the completion of work to integrate the National Health Insurance Card with the Ghana Card.
By dialing the short code * 929 # and following the prompts, holders of the two cards can now link their National Health Insurance Cards to the Ghana Card and use the Ghana Card to access health care at any accredited facility in the country. National health insurance scheme (NHIS) nationwide.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia launched the latest of the government’s digitization efforts on Monday at the start of the NHIS Week celebration in Accra.
“This marks the beginning of a new dawn in the National Health Insurance system. This innovation reaffirms the nuclear power plant government’s commitment to our digital journey towards creating the necessary ICT infrastructure comparable to anything in the developed world, ”said Dr. Bawumia.
He explained that upon taking office in January 2017, the Akufo-Addo government has signaled aspirations to focus on harnessing technology to accelerate Ghana’s development, especially now that the world is experiencing the fourth Industrial Revolution.
“Our rapid adoption of digital technologies has been driven not only by the imperatives of change in the global economy, but also by the need to address our own local development challenges.
“Our general objectives in this digitization agenda are to improve both economic and public sector governance, improve transparency and accountability, improve mobilization of national income, curb corruption and increase access to public services,” he emphasized .
Dr Bawumia indicated that the government’s policy direction is to increase technology to address Ghana’s development problems as much as possible.
“The scope of digitization in the healthcare sector is enormous. It ranges from procurement to nationwide drug inventory management system, patient record management, portability of patient records across the country, health insurance management, and verification of billing and payments between suppliers.
“What is key for us today is leveraging the Ghana Card to transform our healthcare system.
This is a game changer. All you need is the Ghana card, which includes all your important personal details. Linked to the Digital Address System and the Birth and Death Registry, we would have built the most complete database of citizens in regards to our health demographics, “he added.
According to him, the NHIA has taken the necessary steps to make the Ghana card the only form of identification and access to social services.
This fits very well into the government’s inclusiveness agenda to leave no one behind and NHIS is on this path in its quest to provide affordable healthcare to all residents of Ghana. “
He indicated that Ghanaians can use the Ghana card to renew their NHIS membership through mobile money and access health services at all accredited providers.
The vice president also announced that the integration between Ghana card and tax identification numbers, SSNIT cards, passport, DVLA, bank accounts and SIM cards will be launched in early 2021 along with the universal QR code for payments, will make Ghana a functional digital economy.
In a related development, the NHIS Management has announced that as part of NHIS Week, President Akufo-Addo has granted a waiver, for those who take advantage of the offer this week, for the scrapping of one month. waiting period for delayed renewals and new registrations.
