GFA Joins MOYS Clubs, NSA, to Commemorate May 9 Anniversary

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), on Saturday May 9, 2020, joined the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Authority, Accra Hearts of Oak SC, Asante Kotoko SC and others to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the 2001 stadium disaster.

The event was attended by the Vice Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Perry Okudzeto, Chairman of the Board of the National Sports Authority Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority Professor Patrick Twumasi and other dignitaries of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

The GFA was represented by Secretary General Prosper Harrison Addo, Assistant Secretary General Alex Asante, Director of Communications Henry Asante and Sena Akoto-Ampaw, Head of the Competitions Department.

Recall that 127 football fans died in a stadium disaster at Accra Sports Stadium during a Ghana Premier League match between archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko exactly 19 years ago.

“This was a painful day in Ghana’s football history, which we prayed will never happen again. The families and loved ones of our brothers who lost their lives as a result of this unfortunate incident have suffered so much pain over the years that words cannot describe.

“We share their pain and we want to assure them that the state will continue to support them at all times.

“We ask for divine strength for all the families affected in these times and that the deceased have a perfect eternal rest.

“On behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, HE Mr. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minister for Youth and Sports, HE Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the President of the GFA, Kurt ES Okraku, and the people of Ghana, We want to extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and ask for God’s guidance for them as we watch the 19th edition of the May 9 stadium disaster, “said Perry Okudzeto. in a statement on behalf of the Minister for Youth and Sports.

There were also speeches by Elvis Herman Hesse on behalf of Hearts of Oak and Kennedy Boakye Ansah for Asante Kotoko.

For his part, GFA Secretary General Prosper Harrison Addo said: “First of all, once again we send our sincere condolences to the families of all victims of the May 9 disaster. Over the years, the GFA has developed regulations, strategies, and processes to deal with and sanction any perceived wrongdoing. There have been improvements, but we will continue to strive for more progress in our game. Fans must have faith in their club leaders and regulations. In unison, we say NEVER AGAIN. “
