The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed its willingness to persuade Tariq Lamptey to change England’s international alliance to represent the Black Stars.
The 20-year-old recently revealed that he has yet to decide whether to play for England or Ghana after representing the former in the U18, U19, U20 and U21 categories.
The Brighton rising star is eligible to play for Ghana through his parents and the Ghana Football Association has confirmed their goal of convincing him to change his mind.
“We are following all the talents from Ghana that you may have seen on your screens,” said Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku, The Sun reported.
Someone like Tariq Lamptey. We have been talking with his family, to make sure that having identified him as one of the best talents we will bring him to represent our country.
“In the same vein, other people are also talking with him and his family to represent another country [England].
“The national teams are for the Ghanaians. It does not refer only to those residing in Ghana, but to all Ghanaians in the world.
“For that reason, it would be suicidal for us not to search the world for the right talents for Ghana.”
Lamptey would have to play in a competitive game for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions team to ensure his international loyalty.
The youngster has impressed this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in seven games, following his £ 3 million transfer from Chelsea in January.
However, England have several high-quality options as a right back and Lamptey would find himself competing against Trent Alexander-Arnold, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier.
Southgate revealed that Lamptey will be in the England Under-21 squad for the next international break. He said: “Tariq is doing very well and I’m pretty sure he’ll be in the U21. Reece [James] the game has progressed very well and we want it with us ”.
