The Ghana Education Service (GES) has revealed that more than 20 million personal protective equipment (PPE) have been distributed to schools.
Of that number, the GES Director General has indicated that 10 million masks have been supplied to various schools across the country.
Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa added that each student will receive two washable and reusable masks per quarter.
Giving the breakdown of the number of PPE distributed to schools, Mr. Opoku-Amankwa said that 9.9 million hand sanitizers, 38,000 thermometer guns, 53,000 veronica buckets, among others, have been distributed to schools.
Furthermore, he stated that “in our special schools we have also provided electronic dispensers, face shields for special schools, KG, teachers and their stuff.”
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Opoku-Amankwa said the provision of PPE is to ensure the safety of children against the coronavirus while they are in school.
Despite the criticism that the government and the GES had received for the delay in the supply of protective equipment to the different schools, the Director General indicated that the organization was encouraged by these criticisms and comments to fulfill its promise.
Additionally, he commended parents and other stakeholders for their patience and for providing PPE to their districts after the schools reopened.
“We want to take this opportunity to thank the parents, the distribution took a while and as we did it we were encouraged by the response that parents and alumni of the different schools and others in our communities contributed to providing some of these PPE in schools. “.
