The Brazilian Soccer Federation (CBF) has said it will investigate allegations that the Flamengo Gerson midfielder was subjected to racist abuse by a rival player during his team’s 4-3 win over Bahia on Sunday.

Gerson alleged that Colombian midfielder from Bahia, Juan Pablo Ramírez, made a racist comment during the league match at the Maracana stadium.

“I would like to say that I have played many games as a professional and I have never said anything [before] because he had never been prejudiced, “Gerson said.

“But after conceding one of the goals, Ramírez began to argue with [Flamengo’s] Bruno Henrique and I went to talk to him and he said: ‘Shut your mouth, black.’ He has to learn to respect people. “

Ramírez denied the allegation, according to his club, but has been removed from the team until the investigation is complete.

The club said in a statement: “The athlete [Juan Pablo] ‘Indio’ Ramírez vehemently denies the accusation and is being given the opportunity to defend himself against something so serious.

“The club understands, however, that it is indispensable, essential and fundamental that the voice of the victim is predominant in cases of this nature. For this reason, it has decided to immediately withdraw the player from the activities of the team until the investigation is concluded” .

Bahia President Guilherme Bellintani called Gerson to show solidarity.

In a statement, the CBF said it asked its sports disciplinary court to open “an immediate investigation” after Gerson reported the alleged incident in the game’s official report, adding: “We reiterate our deep rejection of racism.”

Flamengo tweeted a message supporting Gerson: “Sunday night was a joy for the victory, but a revolt for the sad episode. And no one is going to shut you up. Not today or ever! The nation is with you.”
