FC Barcelona fear that defender Gerard Piqué will not be available for the national team for the rest of the season.

The Spaniard suffered a knee injury in Barcelona’s loss to Atlético de Madrid on Saturday night and the player was crying after being sent off the field at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The 33-year-old player had a clash with Ángel Correa and the Spanish portal Sports reports that Piqué could face a six-month dismissal. Correa fell with all his weight on Piqué’s outstretched leg, forcing him to bend in an uncomfortable direction.

The injury adds to Ronald Koeman’s problems with the Dutch tactician who is no longer served by Ansu Fati and Samuel Umtiti, and Sergi Roberto also limped in Saturday’s 1-0 loss.

Barcelona in a statement said: “Gerard Piqué has a sprained right knee. The Barça center-back is waiting for more tests to find out the extent of the injury after a collision with the Atlético Correa striker forced him to leave the pitch at the appointed time.

“Sergi Roberto has an injury to his right side and is waiting for more tests to know the extent of the injury. The versatile Catalan picked up the injury towards the end of the defeat in the match against Atlético ”.
